Obtaining funding for research, particularly for ground breaking projects, is always difficult, so it was with immense pride and delight that SORT received the news that it had been successful in its application for a grant for this new project.
The award is being made by the Department of Health as part of a new National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funding programme called Research for Innovation, Speculation and Creativity (RISC).
The LJMC project is one of seven to benefit from the first round of awards for innovative projects that may be considered too unusual to receive funding through more traditional routes but could make a major difference to people’s health and wellbeing.
Heading the project will be Dr Beverley de Valois, the research acupuncturist at the LJMC, who has already undertaken studies in the use of acupuncture for treating some of the side effects of hormone treatments for breast cancer.
The research aims to explore whether acupuncture and moxibustion, forms of complementary medicine originating in China, can help with some of the wider problems experienced by patients with breast cancer and head, neck and throat cancer who develop secondary lymphoedema. It will focus on some of the associated symptoms that are not addressed with conventional treatment.
